Why Are My Therapy Sessions So Effective?
The two most practiced hypnosis techniques are suggestive therapy and age-regression therapy.
Suggestive Therapy
Let’s say the therapy is for anger issues. The therapist suggests that you “put your anger in a box and burn it” and “feel calm talking to your angry boss”. Root cause is not addressed. Sessions are hour-long. Typically 10 sessions are needed.
Age-Regression Therapy
You mentally regress to offending incidents to relive them to release the negative beliefs and emotions you developed. The root cause is thus neutralised and results are lasting. Sessions are about 2 hours. Typically 3 sessions are needed.

Hypnotherapy has been used to to relieve the side-effects of cancer treatments such as chemotherapy. In more than a few instances, it was found that deep emotional trauma and resentment contributed to the development of cancer. In these cases, treating the root cause seemed to result in cancer remission.
T. S. Eliseo offered the following case in The International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, which could be seen as an eradication of a fatal cancer.
A 50-year-old female had breast cancer with many bodily parts removed. When seen she was diagnosed as having metastatic intracranial malignancy (secondary cancers in her head) with intractable pain. She was distracted and disoriented to time and place, although aware of herself. When first seen she complained constantly of great pain throughout her body despite medication. The patient was seen three times for about forty-five minutes over five days. After the third session the patient discontinued the intramuscular medication, indicating that she no longer needed it. She continued the pain reliever, but decreased the dose to twice a day saying she felt fine and wished to return home. She was discharged. Follow up twelve months later found the patient had not been hospitalised and was living at home. This poor woman seems to be a patient in the last stages of dying, with a cancer that had spread into her head with intractable pain. In the paper from which this case was taken, Dr Eliseo makes no claim for curing a cancer with hypnosis, only better orientation to time and place, less confusion, some pain relief and the ability to achieve some level of self-hypnosis. We see this cancer, as reported, as definitely terminal but seemingly arrested.
Many such anecdotal cases exist but there’s little follow-up research. Nonetheless, hypnotherapy for pain relief is a worthwhile endeavour to complement conventional cancer treatment, if not to eliminate the emotional root cause of the cancer.
Annika sought therapy to manage the heavy burden of external expectations that overwhelmed her. During their session, she recalled a significant moment from her childhood at age eight, when her teacher informed her parents about her academic struggles, causing her father’s disappointment. Motivated to improve, Annika worked diligently but faced constant invalidation from her parents, who imposed unrealistic academic standards. This experience left her feeling unworthy and led to a pattern of overworking in her career, compounded by worries that she would never measure up in her personal relationships. After the session, Annika developed the ability to recognise and challenge these negative thoughts, leading her to make the important decision to leave her job for a healthier work-life balance. Victoria’s preoccupation with her weight and the unhealthy habit of binge eating fast food had been a source of deep concern. Hypnotherapy is simply therapy done while in a state of hypnosis. It’s bears some similarity to conventional talk therapies like counselling or psychotherapy such as cognitive behavioural therapy, but with the added benefit of hypnosis. Hypnosis helps quiet the mind, allowing access to the deeper, more subtle thoughts within the subconscious.
Therapeutic interventions during hypnosis harness the powerful subconscious to address the root causes of issues like anxiety, OCD, and physical pain. It’s also highly effective in clearing away limiting beliefs and negative emotions. In many cases, both mental and physical conditions linked to those deep-seated issues can improve quickly. Though I wish hypnotherapy could cure every condition, the reality is different for each person. Success largely depends on whether the issue stems from the mind rather than the body. The technique works wonders for mental challenges, but there’s no surefire way to tell without trying it. Every session brings its own surprises, so I keep an open mind about whether the issue is mental or physical. The answer will be obvious by the end of 1 or 2 sessions.
Another key factor is your ability to set aside your critical thoughts during the session. This is something only you can control. For some, their analytical mind interferes, thus limiting progress. While results still happen, the outcome could be much better without this interference.

A 2013 article by The New Paper highlighted that parents do send their children for hypnotherapy before exams. The Straits Times featured a senior psychiatrist in 2017 who acknowledged the effectiveness of hypnosis. More recently, in 2021, AsiaOne journalist Candice Cai decided to try hypnotherapy after watching an episode of Bling Empire featuring the technique. A quick search on Google reveals numerous positive reviews of hypnotherapy clinics in Singapore.
As an alternative healing method, hypnotherapy unfortunately receives less attention in local media. The stigma surrounding mental health often prevents individuals from discussing their hypnotherapy experiences with friends and family. Nevertheless, the increasing number of positive testimonials indicates that it is becoming more accepted in Singapore.
Each session lasts between 2 to 2.5 hours as we delve deeply into past experiences to address underlying trauma. This approach is an essential part of inner child therapy. The pre-session intake and the post-session debrief is factored into the duration.
